I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. The temperature change certainly felt wonderful to all of us in the South! As always, I'd debated putting Lizzo up for our #MusicMonday, but she's already a goddess of self-love and a chapter unto herself.
I cannot remember the circumstances that led me to first hearing this song. More than likely it was in a commercial or a TV show. This song would not only inspire me as I began to write the outline for my series, but it would also go on to heal me as 2016 unfolded, and carried me into 2017. There were a number of reasons at the time I wish I knew how it felt to be free. 60% of my confinement was my own doing, but there were some portions I had no control over. I'm still completely enamored by the song but in a different way. When I first heard it, it evoked a visceral reaction in me. A longing, a desire. I'd sing it at the top of my lungs to and from rehearsals.
"I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free," was written by Billy Taylor and Dick Thomas. It was a song that became the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. This version is by Nina Simone, and who couldn't help but be healed by her voice. Music is imperative in my personal practice of self-care. I cannot begin to tell you how much healing this song brought me during 2016 and 2017, when I felt lost, scared and trapped because of events in the world and in coming to terms with my own personal journey. I think we can all agree, if one has ever felt trapped, in longing to know what it feels like to be free.
I hope you have a wonderful week.
