Duchess of Grant Park Presented Awards at Atlanta's Suzi Bass Awards

Her Grace, Ava Davis, the Duchess of Grant Park, presented awards at Atlanta's Suzi Bass Awards on October 1st. The Duchess is known for her strong support of the arts in the Atlanta community and is involved herself.

After a hiatus of two years, Suzi Bass Awards hosted a live event revealing the winners for the 2021-2022 Atlanta professional theatre season last night, Monday, November 14, 2022, to patrons and industry artists.

The Suzi Awards Ceremony were held at Southwest Arts Center in the City of South Fulton, 915 New Hope Road, Atlanta, GA 30331. The Suzi Nominations were announced at the nomination party on September 27, generously hosted at Synchronicity Theatre’s Annex Space.

The Suzi Bass Awards were created to celebrate and promote artistic excellence in Atlanta’s professional theatre community. The mission of the Suzi Bass Awards is to support, promote, and advance theaters, theater professionals, and audiences.

The Duchess presented awards to several theater professionals and organizations, including the Alliance Theatre, Actor's Express, Dominion Entertainment, and Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company.

Winners from among the nominated artists in this year’s twenty-four (24) categories took home the coveted award. Judges and Suzi members have chosen recipients in performance, direction, and design categories for plays and musicals.

The Ceremony also honored the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Spirit of Suzi Award, the Callboard Award, and the Volunteer of the Year Award.

The live ceremony included music direction from Imani Quinones and performances from the musicals nominated in the Outstanding Production – Musical category: Mahalia at Dominion Entertainment Group; Marie and Rosetta at Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre; Darlin’Cory at the Alliance Theatre; Trading Places at the Alliance Theatre; and Ain’t Misbehavin’ at Georgia Ensemble Theatre. The ceremony also included performances of scenes from the plays nominated in the Outstanding Production—Play category: Dream House at the Alliance Theatre; An Iliad at Theatrical Outfit; Toni Stone at Alliance Theatre; The Light at Horizon Theatre; Fannie: The Music and Life of Fannie Lou Hamer at Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre and Legacy of Light at Synchronicity Theatre.

The evening’s ambassadors were students from the School of the Arts and Central Gwinnett High School.

Ava Davis, , also known as the Duchess of Grant Park, is a trans actress, producer and writer living in Atlanta, Georgia. She is also an advocate for increasing trans and queer representation, especially that of black and other minorities. She founded her production company, Studio Vosges, in 2019 with the expressed purpose of telling the stories of queer and trans (GSM) black, brown, and beige people.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature, with a focus in art history, film, and creative writing, from the University of Georgia, and has made Atlanta her home, along with her partner, two standard poodles and one bengal cat.

She has acted in, written and produced several short films, including Feast, The Decision and the upcoming short film, Duchess of Grant Park, about a woman who claims the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta as her duchy. The short film had a budget of approximately $20,000; $5,800 of which was successfully crowdfunded.

Ava Davis’ stage credits include The Laramie Project, It’s A Generational Thing, and Locked. In addition, she has performed with the One Minute Play Fest, including a special performance in collaboration with the Queens Theater in New York City to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pride. She also performs sketch comedy and collaborates with Critical Crop Top.
